Lucknow | With resounding pride in Awadh’s cultural roots and the indomitable spirit of one of India’s bravest women freedom fighters, the poster of the upcoming Urdu play ‘Begum Hazrat Mahal’ was launched in a vibrant event held in Lucknow. The play, based on the Revolt of 1857, will be staged on July 30, 2025, at Sant Gadge Auditorium, Gomti Nagar, under the joint banner of the Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy and Uttar Pradesh Artist Association.
The launch event was graced by noted social worker Abdul Wahid, who attended as the Chief Guest, alongside a gathering of artists, theatre enthusiasts, and cultural figures.
Playwright Wamik Khan, speaking at the occasion, said, “This play serves as a tribute to Begum Hazrat Mahal’s courage and aims to inspire future generations who are slowly forgetting the sacrifices of our freedom fighters.”
Director Yusuf Khan added that such theatrical productions are more than entertainment — they act as cultural bridges, promoting Indian heritage on a global stage.
Actress Tanishq Sharma, who portrays the titular role of Begum Hazrat Mahal, called the opportunity both “a responsibility and an honour”. She remarked, “Playing a queen is prestigious, but portraying a warrior queen who led a rebellion is beyond empowering.”
The play promises to be a visual and emotional spectacle, blending:
-
Powerful monologues capturing Begum Hazrat Mahal’s valour and leadership,
-
The historical backdrop of the 1857 uprising,
-
Elements of traditional Urdu music and classical dance,
-
Opulent costumes and realistic stage design.
“This is not just a historical retelling,” said the organisers, “but a tale of self-respect, sacrifice, and patriotism that continues to resonate today.”
The Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy, a cultural wing under the state government, has been working to promote Urdu literature and legacy on national and international platforms.
The poster launch also saw the presence of Miss Uttar Pradesh Vaishnavi Dubey, Deep Sachar, Zubair Ahmed, Arif Khan, Edwin Massey, fashion choreographer Abhishek Rajput, Sufiyan Baig, Nitish, and members of Jashn-e-Azadi Trust, among others.
The play is poised to be a cultural milestone, reviving the story of a queen who defied the might of empire for the love of her people and her land.
